BROOKLYN MUSEUM
|ABOUT
Ninna-ji Temple, which boasts a history of more than 1,200 years, has overcome repeated wars and fires, and its history of reconstruction symbolizes an indomitable spirit. As the chief priest was a member of the imperial family, court culture has taken root, and the temple exudes formal elegance. A collaboration between BROOKLYN MUSEUM and the traditional and historic Ninna-ji Temple, which symbolizes the Japanese spirit of "strength" and "softness," has been realized.
"Touch the History - With the passing of time"Based on the theme, there are 6 types of products in total, a lineup that combines BROOKLYN MUSEUM's leather products whose value deepens with the passage of time and the history and tradition of Ninnaji Temple over 1,200 years. We will be selling sacoches and offering coin cases that are perfect for visiting shrines, as well as ``amulet'' and ``goshuin'' covers that symbolize the graceful and gentle ``Yamato spirit'' that the Japanese have cherished since ancient times. We inherit Japanese culture by integrating the thoughts and traditions that the Japanese have cherished into our products.
The products are made with ``persimmon tanning'' and ``Yamato'' leather, which are packed with Japanese technology.
Using a traditional Japanese dyeing technique, persimmon tannin produces a wood-grain-like appearance on the leather, and is also known as ``sun dyeing.'' Skilled craftsmen in Wakayama apply persimmon tannin liquid, which uses only plant-derived ingredients, to each piece by hand with a brush.

Yamato is BROOKLYN MUSEUM's original leather. Everything from raising the cows to processing the raw hides into leather to the final process of making them into products is handled by Japan's outstanding craftsmen. In order to preserve the texture of the Wagyu beef, it is tanned and dyed using a processing method called ``honzome,'' and the final coloring is carefully hand-dyed one by one.

Furthermore, performing ``Tsuki'', which is rarely practiced these days, is also an important key to talking about Yamato. In order to adjust the texture, the surface is smoothed several times with a hem remover, making the leather even more beautiful and elegant, achieving a clear yet deep aging effect. It is a product that you can enjoy as the color gradually deepens and deepens as you wear it for years, while also valuing the thoughts of the user.
